Probably the most important skill needed in order to not just survive but possibly thrive in wilderness environments is the ability to throw a mental switch in our minds that shuts off civilization. Not morals or beliefs but the prejudices we carry around without realizing it. Just a couple of generations ago indoor plumbing was extremely rare. Today I know many people who can not bring themselves to use an outdoor washroom facility. If you cant use an outhouse how are you going to manage to go in the woods? Do you know enough to dig a hole and bury your waste? To make sure it is not where it may pose a risk to your water supply. Little things everyone knew a hundred years ago.

If You are a picky eater how are you going to get by when nature plays a big part in planning your meals instead of marketing executives at fast food chains. You have to learn to eat what is available. In the wilderness you will not be able to make your favourite thing for dinner. Most especially if you favorite thing to make for dinner is reservations. One major piece of advice, dont venture into the woods for a survival situation unless you have worked up to it. The most important kind of preparation you can make is mental preparation.

The advances in the development of outdoor clothing, equipment, emergency food and techniques have been growing rapidly in recent years. It is extremely important to calmly assess the situation and not allow these seven enemies of survival to interfere with your survival.

Pain - Pain may often be ignored in a panic situation. Remember to deal with injuries immediately before they become even more serious. Getting the best first aid training available to you is extremely important. Next would be seeing that all members of your group are as up to date with theirs as is practical. Finally carry the best first aid kit you can under the circumstances. The kit you can throw in a car and take to a permanent campsite is going to be far more extensive than the one you backpack into the mountains. Few think of ascending levels of first aid kits. My largest is at home and is made up of other kits inside it which can be taken instantly in the event of needing to move quickly. The first aid and survival kits you keep on hand should be updated at least four times a year. They need to be adjusted to keep up with seasonal variations in conditions and the area you are in.

Cold - Cold lowers the ability to think, numbing the body and reducing the will to survive. Never allow yourself to stop moving or to fall asleep unless adequately sheltered. This becomes many times more important in the event you are wet as heat is conducted away from your body extremely quickly in such situations.

Thirst - Dehydration is a common enemy in an emergency situation and must not be ignored. It can dull your mind, causing you to overlook important survival information.

Hunger - Hunger is dangerous but seldom deadly. It may reduce your ability to think logically and increase your susceptibility to the effects of cold, pain and fear.

Fatigue - Fatigue is unavoidable in any situation so it is best to keep in mind that it can and will lower your mental ability. Remember that in an emergency situation this is often the bodys way of escaping a difficult situation. Soldiers have a saying, never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down and dont pass up an opportunity for sleep.

Boredom Loneliness - These enemies are quite often unanticipated and may lower the mind's ability to deal with the situation.

HOW TO:
Build a Fire

Building a fire is the most important task when dealing with survival in the wilderness. Be sure to build yours in a sandy or rocky area or near a supply of sand and water as to avoid forest fires. The most common mistakes made by those attempting to build a fire are: choosing poor tinder, failing to shield precious matches from the wind and smothering the flames with too large pieces of fuel. The four most important factors when starting a fire are spark - tinder - fuel - oxygen. In days gone by it was unthinkable to travel without tinder. Tinder being the easily lit fuel you use to start a small fire which you build into a larger one by adding fuel.

The most common ways to create spark are:

1. Waterproof, strike-anywhere matches are your best bet. Matches may be water-proofed by dipping them in nail polish. Store your matches in a waterproof container.

2. A cigarette lighter is also a good way to produce a spark, with or without fuel.
3. The flint and steel method is one of the oldest and most reliable methods in fire starting. Aim the sparks at a pile of dry tinder to produce a fire.

4. The electric spark produced from a battery will ignite a gasoline dampened rag.
5. Remove half of the powder from a bullet and pour it into the tinder. Next place a rag in the cartridge case of the gun and fire. The rag should ignite and then may be placed into the tinder.

6. Allow the suns rays to pass through a magnifying glass onto the tinder.

7. I personally like to take with me special matches prepared ahead of time. I use a whipping knot to wrap the match. Which should be of the strike anywhere type then dip it in paraffin wax? This in effect makes the match a candle providing you with much more time to start your fire.

Dry grass, paper or cloth lint, gasoline-soaked rags and dry bark are all forms of tinder. Place your tinder in a small pile resembling a tepee with the driest pieces at the bottom. Use a fire starter or strip of pitch if it is available. I carry some powdered magnesium in my survival kit. I also carry a small bar of it with a flint side. It will not burn in solid form but a single spark can ignite the powder. It burns at thousands of degrees so is useful in igniting even damp wood.
It is important to keep in mind that smaller pieces of kindling such as, twigs, bark, shavings and gasoline, are necessary when trying to ignite larger pieces of fuel. Gather fuel before attempting to start your fire. Obviously dry wood burns better and wet or pitchy wood will create more smoke. Dense, dry wood will burn slow and hot. A well ventilated fire will burn best.
Build a Shelter

A small shelter which is insulated from the bottom, protected from wind and snow and contains a fire is extremely important in wilderness survival. Before building your shelter be sure that the surrounding area provides the materials needed to build a good fire, a good water source and shelter from the wind.
Wilderness shelters may include:

1. Natural shelters such as caves and overhanging cliffs. When exploring a possible shelter tie a piece of string to the outer mouth of the cave to ensure you will be able to find your way out. Keep in mind that these caves may already be occupied. If you do use a cave for shelter, build your fire near its mouth to prevent animals from entering.

2. Enlarge the natural pit under a fallen tree and line it with bark or tree boughs.

3. Near a rocky coastal area, build a rock shelter in the shape of a U, covering the roof with driftwood and a tarp or even seaweed for protection.

4. A lean-to made with poles or fallen trees and a covering of plastic, boughs, thick grasses or bark is effective to shelter you from wind, rain and snow.

5. A wigwam may be constructed using three long poles. Tie the tops of the poles together and upright them in an appropriate spot. Cover the sides with a tarp, boughs, raingear or other suitable materials. Build a fire in the center of the wigwam, making a draft channel in the wall and a small hole in the top to allow smoke to escape.

6. If you find yourself in open terrain, a snow cave will provide good shelter. Find a drift and burrow a tunnel into the side for about 60 cm (24 in) then build your chamber. The entrance of the tunnel should lead to the lowest level of you chamber where the cooking and storage of equipment will be. A minimum of two ventilating holes are necessary, preferably one in the roof and one in the door.


CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
Clothing

Clothing must provide warmth and offer protection from the elements. Layers of light, natural fibers are best. Hats are a must, as they offer protection from both the heat and cold. Water proof outer layers are necessary.

Equipment
Equipment must be easily manageable and promote survival in any situation. Items to carry in your pockets may include a fire starter, waterproof matches and/or lighter, a pocket knife, goggles, compass, small first-aid kit and some sort of trail food.

Survival Kit

Items for your survival kit should be packed in a waterproof container that can double as a cooking pot and water receptacle and be attached to your belt. I guess I always wanted to be Batman when I grew up and have made myself a utility belt with a number of pouches. In my case they are digital camera cases. Each case has items for a different purpose. Purposes range from fire starting to first aid. To signaling to twine and pocket duct tape. One note duct tape does not work well in extreme cold.

Backpack
In addition to a survival kit, a good, comfortable backpack is mandatory. Loads of about 18 kg (40 lb.) are average. Items to include are; flashlight, extra jacket, socks and mittens, a pocket saw, gas camp stove, first aid kit, emergency food, and a tent and fly. Depending on season a sleeping bag or substitute may be a must.

CHECK LIST
Useful items to include on your hike are:

1. A map and compass.

2. A large, bright plastic bag will be useful as a shelter, signaling device or in lieu of raingear.

3. A flashlight with extra batteries.

4. Extra water and food.

5. Extra clothing such as raingear, a toque and gloves, a sweater and pants.

6. Sun protection such as sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and long sleeved clothing.
7. A sharp pocket knife. Your main knife should have a locking blade to prevent slipping and injury. A second Swiss army knife or multi tool can also be very useful.

8. Waterproof matches a lighter and/or a flint.

9. Candles and fire starter.

10. A first aid kit.

11. A whistle, flares, a tarp.

Remember this list is an absolute minimum. Your own location, situation and training will determine what else to add to this list. Never take anything with you which you have no knowledge of how to use.

For the UGM motherboard we used an ASUS Striker II Extreme motherboard. The chipset for this board is an NVIDIA 790i model. I customized the UGM case by cutting and drilling a space into the top of it for the radiator to suck air from an mount to. Do I know what I am donig? If not, then stop right there and just buy yourself a case that is pre-made for water cooling if thats your plan, or has good enough airflow for your application.
Danger Den is one company that sells a number of cases for water cooling. Buy yourself parts that fit together rather than making your own, and take your time on your finishing touches.
Water cooling multiple graphics cards
Since there are three graphics cards in the UGM, there is very little room between them is very limited. The barbs that came from BFG were made by danger den, and they were so small that they drove me insane not getting them to leak. I replaced them with EK barbs that helped me keep the setup from leaking, but some other problems still exist. If you are trying to put the hose onto the two barbs, you have to pull the cards apart something that you cannot do when they are in their slots. You have to therefore remove all three of the cards, guestimate the length of the tube you need, put the cards together before hand, and then try to put them all into their slots. Remember when removing these cards from their sockets, they have locks, so you have to somehow contort your finger into unlocking multiple slots at once.
You will tear your hair out over this. The EK barbs really help, but its very frustrating.
Solutions? Air cooling! Seriously guys, since the drivers for your GPU only let you overclock all three to the same speed, you can only go as fast as the slowest card so just air cool them. Secretly NVIDIA has the ability to clock them independently, but they dont let you, and you did not hear that from me.  Anyway, the heat sinks on the cards you can buy these days are so massive, and effective, that you really are not going to see tha tmuch of an improvement out of an overclocked triple SLI setup on water, rather than air. Water cool your CPU, or one GPU if you want, but lets just leave the triple GPUs on air mmkay?
Extreme Overclocking
Overclocking is really very simple in concept. You essentially fiddle with your voltages and clock speeds until your computer starts to become unstable under high load, and then you drop it back a few notches. Sounds simple enough, yes? In practice however, you will spend hours upon hours running stress tests, blue screening, resetting, and starting over. 
Instead, just do a safe overclock, and be happy. Its when you are trying to get that last few .2 ghz out of your processor that you are going to get yourself into  trouble.

Since my last recap seemed to generate some interest, I figured I'd keep going until somebody tells me "Stop!" The show this week didn't feature anything quite as spectacular as durrrr's performance in episode 2, but there were still some interesting hands.

But first, as a completely irrelevant aside, can I say that I'm confused by all the concern about money given to AIG being paid to other banks? The whole reason to bail out AIG was concern of "contaigon", i.e., they can't pay off obligations, which bankrupts other important players in the financial system. Now that they are indeed using the money to pay off their obligations to other important players in the financial system that's....shocking? bad? I don't get it. If you want to get mad about the money going out the door in the form of bonuses, fine. But some of the money had Goldman's name on it the minute the government started writing checks.

OK, moving on...I was hoping Negreanu might step up his game a little bit as the session went along. Ehh...I think we can so far say:

I mean...when you're first doing leakfinding with a friend who's new to NLHE, what's like the first thing you explain to them to improve profitability? Probably something like...stop open limp-calling marginal hands? Stop check/calling the flop with marginal hands? Especially vs. good players? Who is Daniel trying to pwn post-frop by open limping As8s? Anyway, that's what he decides to do, and Barry raises him from the button with JTo. Of course the flop comes Q98 with two diamonds and one spade, giving Barry the nut straight.

Daniel check/calls a heftily sized c-bet. I think he would probably be folding this if it weren't for the one spade on board. If he were in position, so that he'd have much more freedom to operate on the turn and river, it's a more defensible call. But here, even if Barry does have AK/AJ or an underpair so that Daniel is ahead...how often is Daniel going to get to showdown? If Daniel does nail the turn with an 8 or an A, how often does he have the best hand when a bunch of money goes in?

Well, we're about to find out because an offsuit A peels off on the turn. This gives Daniel aces up and pretty much guarantees that he's going to lose a bunch of money in the hand. His check/call on the turn is pretty standard. He might consider raising to protect his hands against diamonds, but given their stack sizes, he can't really raise enough to protect his hands without committing himself vs. all the hands that pwn him, like AQ, QQ, 99, JT, etc...and I don't think Barry is going to go nutso and lose a whole bunch of money with AK on that board.

The river comes an offsuit K, a bad card for Daniel. He now loses to AK and KK, which he was beating before. He makes kind of a crying call of a very hefty river value bet from Barry. Maybe he thinks Barry would value bet KQ that strong, hoping that Daniel had an A-high flush draw that ended up with just a pair of aces? Or Barry could turn QJ into a bluff on the river? Daniel played the hand so passively that he does induce some 3-barrel bluffs from Barry on a gross board like this, but in this hand he got pwnd pretty hard. And those are just the kind of tough situations you get yourself into when you limp/call and then check/call twice.

The other big hand of the night also involved Negreanu. He opened with a 2.8x raise holding JJ, and got called by Eastgate holding 33 on the button, Benyamine holding 44 in the SB, and Eli Elezra with 32ss from the BB. The flop comes 742 with two diamonds. Looks safe enough for JJ, so Daniel fires out 8k when checked to. Eastgate floats him with 33, and Benyamine raises to 41k with his set, prompting an instafold from Elezra.

I think Eastgate's call really pwns Daniel here. He's thinking that Benyamine is reading Eastgate's hand well, and hoping that Daniel is c-betting with air as he normally would, and hoping to take it down (as he did with 9h6h on a dry paired board earlier in the show...he got called by Doyle slowplaying KK and Elezra raised and lost a bunch of money bluffing with A-high). Benyamine is definitely capable of making such a play with even a marginal draw such as 86 or A3. Certainly he would be doing it with big diamond draws and straight flush draws quite often. It's also unlikely that Benyamine would flat call a smallish raise preflop with AA-QQ this deep, with Eastgate having called already and Elezra virtually guaranteed to call in the BB. So the only hands Daniel needs to worry about are sets and maybe 24s or 74s. He decides to call, making the pot just over 100k going to the turn.

The turn is an offsuit 4, a very bad card for Daniel. None of the hands Daniel beat on the frop are helped by that card, unless Benyamine were making a move with 45 or A4. Moreover, it reduces the number of 44 combinations DB could have from 3 to 1, and the number of 42s combinations from 3 to 2.

My cousin Kim gave me a new diary yesterday. She received it for graduation, but she prefers to journal on her computer. With a security lock, of course, she confessed. Anyway, this nicely bound book (a green product made of recycled materials) seems to be enticing me to write. Especially since I already filled up my old diary, which is safely hidden away in one of my suitcases tucked into the back of the guest room closet. Anyway, since today was rather interesting and the beginning of summer vacation, I will start here. Although to get I need to go back to before the school year ended. Id been attending Harrison High for several weeks when Mr. Fenton challenged our art class to volunteer for a community project. Wed been invited by the park district to create a mural on a downtown youth center. A lot of kids signed up, and everyone seemed supportive and interested. But today, the first day of the project, Marissa Phillips and I were the only ones to actually show. It figures, she said as the two of us stood gazing up at the big, boring wall. The paint was splotchy looking, with random beige smears that resembled a bad case of psoriasis. Probably someones attempt to hide the graffiti and tagging, although a few offensive words still showed through.

What do you mean? I asked. That no one else would come. s that? I adjusted the twisted strap of my Osh Kosh overalls. Id gotten dressed pretty quickly this morning, barely managing to catch the downtown bus. Because people are basically selfish. I turned and looked at her. With hands planted on her hips, Marissa stared at the ugly wall and frowned. For some reason, when I first began attending Harrison High, I felt drawn to this girl. Like we shared some commonality. And I suppose we do have some physical similarities. Were both tall and have long hair, although hers is straight and mine is curly. And because she dyes it black, her hairs a lot darker than mine. I think thats why her complexion looks so pale. Whereas mine (thanks to my dad) is the color of café au lait.

But our looks aside, we are similar in other ways too. Or maybe we both just have an attitude. Shes not afraid to speak her mind and has opinions that not everyone shares. Shes two years older than I am. In fact, she just graduated with my cousin Kim. Not that she seems older exactly. Or maybe I just feel older than sixteen. Sometimes I feel like Im in my thirties. But a hard life can do that to a person.

So if thats true, I asked Marissa, if people are basically selfish, why are you here?

She laughed. I thought you knew.m doing community service.For what?something that happened a couple of months ago. I guess you hadnt moved here yet.What did you do?I got caught with alcohol in my car.Driving under the influence? I knew Marissa was kind of a wild child, but I thought she had more sense than that.

She shook her head firmly. I wasnt under the influence. I was underage.Well, obviously.It didnt really help much that my dads a cop. She made a face as she reached into her bag and retrieved a pack of cigarettes. She shook one out, quickly lit it, then blew out an exasperated

puff.

Your dads a cop? Now this caught me off guard. Of all people who might have law enforcement officials in their family, Marissa just doesnt seem to fit the profile. I can only imagine how frustrated her father must feel.

Oh yeah She peered back at the wall. In fact it was his recommendation that I spend my summer vacation performing community service. If dear old Dad hadnt been in court that day, I probably wouldve gotten off a lot easier.re doing community service for the whole summer? She blew another puff of smoke over her shoulder.

And youre okay with that?It was either that or give up my car and move out of the house. And I wasnt financially ready for thatnot just yet. She took in a slow drag, then looked curiously at me. So whats your excuse?For being here.You mean because I must be basically selfish too? She shrugged.

I just wanted to do it, I admitted. I mean, when Mr. Fenton described the project, it sounded kind of fun to help someone else, and he made it seem like it would only take a week. Marissa laughed sarcastically. Yeah, right. Think again. I frowned back up at the wall. With just the two of us, this mural could end up being your entire summer of community service.I wouldnt mind so much, except that its going to be scorching out here before long, and this wall is in the sun most of the day. She reached in her bag again, and this time pulled out her cell phone.

We volunteered to do this mural project, and we sure could use some big, strong guys to help out. She smiled knowingly. Oh yeah, for sure. where were going with this mural and get the paint and stuff. Maybe not today. But how about tomorrow? First thing in the morning? She got a catty smile now. Oh yeah, totally. Then she hung up.

Help on the way?Sounds like it. She slipped her phone back into her bag.

But I didnt know his number, so I called Caitlin. She and her husband, Josh, are the youth leaders, and shes been sort of mentoring me since I committed my life to God a couple of weeks ago. She answered, and I quickly explained the mural project and our lack of volunteers. It was supposed to take only a week, I said finally. But with just Marissa and me and this great big wall, well, its a little overwhelming. Shes already called a guy to help, but What a cool project, Caitlin said. That building is a real eyesore. Its great that someone wants to make it nice, and Im sure thatll be a blessing to the kids who use the center. Why dont I call around and see who might be willing to help out?d be awesome, Caitlin.When do you want your helpers to show up?We have to figure some things out first.
