What better way to end college than by spending a week drinking on the beach with 12 of your closest friends and hooking up with everyone you've been eying for the past four years? As soon as we got there we started noticing Pomona people walking around all over the place. The funny thing is- everyone was super friendly, like way more friendly than they would have been at school. People on the beach were saying hi to each other who would never have said hi on campus.

Conveniently, Claire's boyfriend and all of his friends were only staying three blocks from our house, and unlike us, they had internet. And do you know who else was in that house? I'm sure you do, but I'll tell you anyway: Daniel Dong. hahahahahahaha!

Ok very long background story:
So way back at the very beginning of college, like literally the second day we were there, I saw my roommate eating lunch with this very cute boy. Afterwards, the three of us walked over to some event thing, and we introduced ourselves, and he says to me, "Are you half asian?" He could tell because half chinese too. And that was how I fell in love with Daniel Dong. Now he thinks we met dancing in the fountain later that night at the Freshman Dance, but I know that's not true because I made him dance in the fountain because I was already way way attracted to him.

For the rest of freshman year I was crazy about him in a var var creepy way. I would make excuses to show up in his hall and say hi. I went on the insano AAMP retreat and got all in touch with my Asian side because he was going. But nothing ever happened, and eventually we started dating other people and life went on. We were abroad different semesters junior year and so by the time I saw him at the beginning of senior year, it'd had been a year since I'd seen him and he had a new tattoo. Mmmmm Daniel Dong.

Alright, so fast forward to senior week, my last chance to get on the DDong train. The girls and I went over to the guys house to use the internet and somehow ended up playing Monopoly for like 2 hours with him and Claire and her boyfriend and other people. And no offense, Vicky, but that has to be the most boring board game in the history of the world. People kept talking about "options" and "futures" as if that made it more interesting or as if I had any fucking clue what they were talking about. Anyway, clearly we make sacrifices for the people we want. Sacrifices, like returning later that night to play Settlers of Catan (the second most boring board game in the history of the world) with DDong as my partner!!! Ok, well to be fair, it might be an ok game, but I was really paying attention because I was too busy taking every opportunity to "strategize" (read: lean in all close-like) "make room for others" (read: share my chair with him) and basically do my stutty-girl best to get this shit moving. Happily my efforts paid off, because despite the fact we lost pretty badly, we ended up hooking up that night on the loudest air mattress in the world in the back room of my house (!!).

And then there was a minor problem.

So DDong is moderately good friends with Adan, and worse, Adan was arriving the next day and staying in the same house as the other guys. Things between Adan and me were really over, but since he is pretty much the nicest guy at school, I was worried I was about to do a bad thing. So in the midst of straddling DDong on the bed, I felt like I had to ask:

"How good of friends are you with Adan?"

Which, I know, is a bit of a mood-killer. We talked about it for a bit, and weren't really sure what to do, so we ended up deciding that we'd ignore it for now, and DDong would talk with Adan the next day (Real honorable right.

What are these “Buy American” provisions that everyone is worried about?
The stimulus bill recently signed by Barack Obama, the U.S. President, promises $787-billion in spending on tax cuts, social programs and other efforts aimed at curtailing the recession. Of that, $111-billion is earmarked for construction projects, such as roads, bridges and transit system. However, construction or repair projects only qualify for the cash if “all of the iron, steel, and manufactured goods used in the project” are made in the United States.

Are there any exceptions to the “Buy American” rule?
Yes. Thankfully for Canada, the “Buy American” clause has plenty of loopholes. Projects do not need to use all-American products if it will increase the total cost by more than 25% or if there is not enough domestic iron and steel available. Most importantly from Canada’s perspective, the clause states it will only be applied “in a manner consistent with United States obligations under international agreements.”

So how that clause protect Canada, exactly?
Because Canada has signed not one, but two trade deals with the United States that outlaw protectionist policies like the “Buy American” clause. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), launched in 1994, bars the United States federal government from having discriminatory procurement practices, meaning it must allow Canadian companies to bid on projects it bankrolls. Similar rules exist under World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements. This all means that Canadian-made goods should be allowed in most cases.

Hang on. What do you mean that Canadian goods should be fine “in most cases”?
There are also loopholes in NAFTA and the WTO agreements. For example, NAFTA does not apply to federal highway or mass transit projects, so U.S. officials will still be required to abide by the “Buy American” clause when laying new interstates or building subway lines.

You said NAFTA only applies to the federal government, but the U.S. government intends to hand some of the money to states and municipalities. Could they impose their own “Buy American” provisions?
Probably not, according to Jeffrey Schott, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington. Even if the projects are executed by a state or city, they would still likely qualify as federal programs under NAFTA because the U.S. government is providing the funds and dictated how they can be used. Furthermore, 37 U.S. states are themselves signatories to WTO agreements, providing Canada with further protection.

Why would the U.S. impose a “Buy American” clause if it cannot be applied in most cases?
Canada is only protected because of its pre-existing agreements with the United States. There are plenty of countries -- such as Russia, China, Brazil and India -- that lack similar deals and will likely feel the “Buy American” pinch.

So Canada has no reason to worry?
It may be too soon to relax, according to Mr. Herman. “Notwithstanding an obligation to allow Canadian companies to bid on projects, there could still be a tendency to favour local companies over Canadian or other foreign companies,” he said. And if the U.S. does violate its trade deals, it would take a long time to challenge them. “The money will be gone in 18 months, one assumes, and you won’t get a NAFTA panel rolling for five years.” Mr. Herman said.

Wow, it seems like this “Buy American” clause will cause plenty of headaches. It must mean lots of jobs for U.S. workers, right?
Not really. Imposing this provision will protect about 1,000 jobs in the U.S. steel industry, according to Mr. Schott. In a total U.S. workforce of 140 million people, that is not a significant gain. “These additional Buy American provisions don’t get you much, and they have the huge downside of making it more difficult for the United States to work with our major trading partners,” Mr. Schott said.

Valentines Day comes only once in a year, and no wonder that as soon as it hits us, we immediately focus all of our attention to our better half. What is more, he has also started socializing with his wifes friends and doesnt hesitate to travel with her too! All in all, their relationship has become much better than what it was a week ago. And all this started with a simple change she made!
Remember that we human beings are always insecure and crave for some appreciation from someone very close to us. If you learn to appreciate your partners admirable qualities which made you fall in love with him in the first place, he wont mind if you later point out some of his not-so-good qualities. It is like offering sugar to a child before asking him to take the bitter stuff; if you try to push the bitter stuff to him at first, he wont take it.
It is also important to explicitly state how much you love your partner. Many people safely assume that their partner knows it all, but that may not be the case with everyone. Your partner wants not only tacit but also an explicit expression of love from you; so speak up! This one simple change would keep the candle of Valentines Day burning in your relationship forever!

To retain this distinction, it seems preferable to avoid speaking of "substitutionary atonement" in the case of Jesus Christ. Sölle herself proposes to speak rather of Christ the Representative... Christ's redemptive act, unlike the merely mechanical substitution of the scapegoat, is the loving identification of the innocent sufferer with the guilty on behalf of whom he suffers. However, it cannot be understood in merely moral or psychological terms, as the vocabulary of "loving identification" might seem to imply. Even when personalistically interpreted, "substitution" does not do justice to the reality, since a substitute could not do for us any more than we could do for ourselves. In view of his theandric constitution as incarnate Son of God, Christ is able to do far more for us than any human person could do. He stands before the Father as the representative head of the new, reborn humanity. He is the Second Adam, the progenitor in the order of grace, the firstborn of the dead (1 Cor 15:45; Rom 8:29; Col 1:18). Alone among human beings, he is qualified to remove the guilt of human sin and to communicate divine life.
Because there is no mechanical substitution of one person for another, the representative death of Christ does not automatically remit the guilt of sinners. The merits of Christ are not simply imputed to us by some kind of juridical fiction; rather we are truly and inwardly healed through the infusion of the grace that flows from him. We have to allow ourselves to be taken over by Christ as he stands in for us. This we do by appropriating Christ's action on our behalf through free and personal acts of faith, hope, and loving obedience...
Does the vicarious nature of redemption mean that Jesus is punished in our place? Some authors, indulging in very powerful rhetoric, describe in lurid terms the way in which the wrath of the eternal Father was visited upon the guiltless Son, so that he felt rejected and even hated by God... Some go so far as to suppose that Jesus suffered a loss of faith, fell into despair, and underwent the pains of the damned. His cry on the Cross, "My God, my God, why hast thou abandoned me?" (Matt 27:46 parallels) is considered to confirm this interpretation.
Against these views, I would insist that Jesus remained at all times the well-beloved Son, living in close communion with the Father through the incomparable grace that flooded his soul. Far from despairing, he continued to trust in the Father, whom he loved. Since the cry from the Cross is a quotation from the first verse of Psalm 22, the interpretation remains somewhat uncertain. It seems probable that Jesus (or the Evangelists who ascribe these words to him) had in mind the whole of the psalm, which Jesus is, so to speak, intoning. As Walter Kasper points out, "According to the practice of the time, saying the opening verse of a psalm implied the whole psalm."20 The Psalm, beginning as a lament, turns into a song of thanksgiving to the God who saves from death:
"I will tell of thy name to my brethren; In the midst of the congregation I will praise thee... All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord.(Ps 22:22, 27; cf. Heb 2:12)."
It would be a mistake, therefore, to interpret the words quoted by Jesus as though he were describing his psychological state of feeling rather than referring to the religious message of the Psalm.
The fact remains, however, that Jesus did suffer terrible afflictions, and did so because it was the Father's will that he should do so. He was abandoned in the sense that God did not come miraculously to his aid, as presumably God could have done. Would it not have been far better, some ask, for the Father simply to forgive the guilt of the human family without exacting any retribution? For all we know, it might have been possible for God to grant this free forgiveness. But would it have been better? How, if he had done so, would the right order have been established? What kind of healing would have been effected? How would we have learned the full gravity of sin? What motivation would we be given for avoiding sin in the future? What consolation would be given to persons burdened with exorbitant and unjust sorrows? All things considered, it appears that God has exercised greater mercy toward us by giving his innocent Son to suffer and die on our behalf than if he had simply canceled out the debt of sin...
The Theories Compared
The advantages of the representational sacrifice theory, and the answers to the objections raised against it, may be clarified by a review of the alternative theories described at the opening of this paper. In some ways the sacrificial interpretation, as I have proposed it, resembles the first theory, that of penal substitution, but the differences are important. Both theories maintain that Jesus suffered terrible ordeals and thereby won for sinners a release from the pains they deserve. But the penal substitution theory makes it appear that God punishes the innocent in place of the guilty, thereby suggesting that God is unjust. The theory of representative headship, by contrast, looks upon Jesus as one who offered satisfaction, rather than endured punishment. These are true alternatives. As Anselm insisted, sin requires either punishment or satisfaction; satisfaction takes the place of punishment... Satisfaction is voluntarily given, whereas punishment must be coercively endured. Satisfaction, unlike punishment, can be offered by the innocent as well as by the guilty.
Punishment, as an act of justice, must be strictly proportioned to the offense, but satisfaction, as a work of love, may be superabundant. According to Thomas Aquinas, Christ "offered to God more than was required to compensate for the sin of all humanity.
