the opposite way n never had the nerve to tell someone that i had a feeling for them, im not ugly or fat im ok im just a shy person n i had my best friend that always dated n she used to tell me about her relations i was the wise one in my group always people came to me for advice, n then my friend told me about this guy she knew about online n he was cute n she showed me the pic n told me he liked her n then i decided i want to make an account my self and start meeting just new people n then it came across my mind to talk to that guy so i looked for the mail my friend sent me with his pic and took the name from the photo file n started searchin for the guy on msn n bingo i got it right i started talking with him n i was very tough n very straight forward - i never had relations with guys i got the whole image how to get into someones hotmail i got his mail and stole the password n got into his mail n to my shock i saw another girl was sending him mails as if shes his gf i txt msged him and told him i got into ur mail u bastard and saw the love mails from the other girl n to my surprise she was that other kidnapped girl he told me about to my surprise either shes another girl that had never seen him in reality so he lied to me n said shes zacks girl friend and that him and zack shares the same hotmail account n they both have the same password and id to my surprise zack had the same birthday same college same class everything is identical and jason too although it was a different yahoo account but he had the same credentials i used his mail and logged on all websites he was registered in n asked for passwords n they were sent on his mail i got his sms.ac password and id i took this password and tried it on jasons account it worked so it occured to me the same person always thinks of one password if he had many accounts so he wouldnt forget them this person turned out to be jason and zack and yasser all in one character and every time i confronted him he lies out of it he was very talented at lying he was so mysterious liar always knew what to say although all his lies were so lame n hard to believe but he just lied so i decided ill talk to this other girl her name was ashley she also knew this person online n told me she recieved the same anonymous mail telling her its a girl called sarah butt impersonating zack and yasser it was a pretty damn shock for both of us and then i went into the profile page in the mail i noticed his alternative email and he managed to ask hotmail support to give him his mail back n he got it but after a while i found that alternative mail added me as a friend and i talked with that person she was a girl called sarah has the same birthday same college and same style of talking i decided ill get into her mail too i did and found a specific mail of something she bought online it was a device that turnes a girls voice to a guys voice i told my friend about that mail i found n told ashley what i discovered cos this girl too has the same ip address of zacks and jasons and yassers mails and it turned out to be that all 4 characters are jus one maniac gurl called sarah butt and strangely i got a phone call from UK and i answered i was told hi im sarahs mum and shes been playing with u and another girl called ashley and i want u to block sarahs and yassers adds from ur list and jus continue ur life, and her sister talked to me and told me sarah has problems and thats why shes doing this i jus was surprised how could she be so easy on her after what she knew about her. Lets hear it for sunburn, jet-lag and being back in rainy Boston. Last week was in LA to meet with clients who were attending the iDate LA conference so I decided to stop by the show to check out the west coast version of iDate.
For those of you who have never been to an iDate event, a quick primer. iDate has been around long enough to be considered a must-attend event for the online dating industry. It has the unique position of being the only dating conference in the US. There was a previous conference organizer, SITRAS, which folded after only two shows. Turns out that at the time the US dating industry could only support one show a year. iDate runs two US shows a year, one held in the Jan-Feb time frame in Miami and a summer show in Los Angeles. There are also European and Asian versions of the conference. Most major US and some EU and Asian players invested in the online dating industry attend the Miami show. However, many of them dont go to LA unless thats their back yard.
Given the importance of an event of this magnitude, a large number of people came up to me during every iDate show show to give me their personal assessment, some of which I have included below, along with my own observations. Feedback came from a wide spectrum of people, from first timers and speakers to people and companies who have spent tens of thousands of dollars on sponsorships and entry fees over the years.

How have the books/movies you've read inspired the books you've written? What are you currently reading?

LSC: Everything I see and hear becomes material in some way. That's one of the drawbacks to being a writer--it becomes difficult to just experience things without taking notes for the next book. I tell my friends "You're all material" and they think I'm joking.

Right now I'm reading Harold McGee's On Food And Cooking, because to know how food behaves makes one a better cook. I'm also read Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's Epistemology of the Closet, which was mentioned in Beyond Heaving Bosoms, a book about romance novels written by two of my friends, Candy Tan and Sarah Wendell. I am also on a huge Georgette Heyer kick right now, reading everything by her I can get my hands on.


IBT: How do you decide what ideas make it on the page? What were some of the ideas that didn't make it?

LSC: Really, the characters do all the deciding. I have a rough idea of what is most likely to happen, but I'm such a seat-of-the-pants writer that I'm often just as surprised as the reader is when the book takes a left turn.

I do have a "slush pile" of scribbles and chapters that got cut or went nowhere, for one reason or another. There were actually five alternate endings to the final book in the Dante Valentine series, each of them more gruesome than the last. I had a lot of work to do before I uncovered the right ending! Sometimes it's like that--the book tries to trick you.


IBT: What's the strangest thing you've ever gotten inspiration from?

LSC: Brushing my teeth, actually. I get attacked by ideas when I'm doing, erm, "personal care" things in the bathroom. A lot. I think it's because I'm not really moving from one task to the next, I'm just in a funny in-between trance doing these things, and the inspiration can get a word in edgewise.


IBT: What is your favorite type of hero?

LSC: I like conflicted, dark, nasty heroes who end up being redeemed almost despite themselves. For me, a hero is all about how he makes the choice to redeem himself, to lose himself in something bigger than he is. This is different than a heroine's struggle, which is to make the choice to become bigger than she thinks she can be. I have different requirements for heroes and heroines.

I think it's because I'm a woman author. For me, the heroine starts out being defined by other people--girls in our society are from the moment they're born, it's all about other people's needs and desires. It's very subversive for a heroine to start realizing she's bigger than the things other people would foist on her. So, my heroes are all about redemption and my heroines are all about choice.


IBT: As an author how do you respond to those who think that censorship is a necessary evil?

LSC: With a great big raspberry and possibly an obscene gesture. I have a hard time taking anyone who says that seriously.

In my house, we have an "if you can reach it, you can read it--and if you can't reach it, get a stepstool!" policy. I also don't censor the movies my children watch--I watch them with my kids. (Though we don't watch television very much; it's all DVDs.) I think a lot of parents get the knee-jerk "censorship!" reaction because it's easier than being involved and patiently answering questions. Sure it's uncomfortable when your kids ask the hard questions about violence, sex, and a whole host of other issues. But nobody said parenting was going to be easy. If you wanted "easy" you shouldn't have had kids.

Besides, I was raised in a very dysfunctional family that relied (and still relies) on secrets and lies. Struggling free of that, learning to tell the truth and become a better person, made me very exquisitely wary of any form of censorship.

In a larger sense, censorship is just another means of control. State and society already have enough means to control people, between the jackboot, the truncheon, and the natural cooperative urge of humanity. Censorship is unnecessary. It is a completely unnecessary evil.

As an author, too, I'm constantly struggling against the urge to please people and soften the truth, to pull my punches. The temptation is always there, but it's just that--just a temptation to be avoided. Lies and abuse depend on secrecy and fear. To speak honestly and openly is to cut down on both, and I think that's a sacred trust for an author. Readers hate being lied to--it says that you don't think they're strong enough or smart enough. The shock of recognition from a good piece of art is because that art contains a truth. It is like sunshine--the best disinfectant.

IBT: Have you ever written something that you feel uncomfortable writing, knowing that your family and friends will probably end up reading it?

LSC: Yes. All the time. That feeling of discomfort is usually a sign that I'm on the right track. That space of being uncomfortable is where a lot of really great, wrenchingly powerful and incredibly moving art comes from.

IBT: What favorite book of yours would you like to see be turned into a movie?

LSC: That's a hard question, each book is so different, and I love them all for different reasons. But if I had a choice, it would probably be the second Jill Kismet book, Hunter's Prayer. A lot of my other stuff probably wouldn't translate out well to the silver screen, despite the fact that I'm a very visual writer. (I see the books in my head.) But Hunter's Prayer was so raw and powerful for me, and it has so much imagery that I didn't realize I'd put in it until afterward...If I really, really had to choose, it would probably be that one.

I find in general, richer Cambodians have an aversion to second-hand things, whereas I always think second-hand because I want to save money. Maybe they are speaking from experience though, who knows?

I got a friend to compare prices in Singapore and found electric strimmers to be cheaper than the petrol ones found in Cambodia. On the other hand, the petrol ones in Singapore are more expensive, twice the price, but they are good ones.

Usually people use electric ones for their homes, because most people live in a country where land is expensive. Electric ones are not available in Cambodia because land here is cheap and many people own large tracts (our rented place sits on about 16,000 square feet of land).

Anyway, I had a spot of good luck recently. A woman came and asked if she could cut the grass to feed her cows. We had already considered this as a solution: letting in a few cows to eat our grass. Except our five dogs go barking mad when they see the placid creatures (Austin was kicked by one for annoying it).

It's funny how things work. You think something is concrete solid, yet a small crack can deteriorate everything. I actually felta stab in my heart, Iactually felt it. You know how October is seen only as the month that contains Halloween and Canadian Thanksgiving Day? I found out an interesting fact: both my grandparents and parents got married in October. And their marriages were always concrete solid; my grandparents have passed away now, but they were together for a long time. It's all funny because Ialways wanted to have my wedding in October, namely on Halloween (which happens to be the day my grandparents married). Two generations of successful marriages is a great support when it comes to love, wouldn't it be? Viz. and me are distanced at the moment, and what better time to meet up? Summer time gives us the time needed to save money up for travel and whatever else.

I'm also going to go see my doctor in June to see if Ican possibly get my foot surgery done. Foot surgery, you ask? I was born with a foot that was bent more than necessary. While it's not as bad as it was, it could be straightened just a bit more. I'm hoping it'd be done in the summer, so I'd be crutchless. Ahahaha, I almost typed crotchless, of all great typos... And this summer, Iwant me and Dad to finish our house. It's in a hectic state with one room stuffed full of shit and a bathroom with nothing but a running toilet. It's a nice house beside those two things, but I find it kind of embarrassing. And another thing, we need to finally unpack all of our boxes... It's been how long since we moved here? TWELVEYEARS! Okay now that I've calmed down a bit, I'll talk more about what I'm worried about.

It's hard to watch as someone you feel deeply in love with mention the fact that they don't know if they feel the same. I never thought it'd feel like this. And to think I used to say people who get dramatic over love are fools. But here Iam, in the same situations as other people. Love should be a choice, and I will never take that away from someone just to save myself a heartbreak. Hahaha, it's hard typing this without shedding tears, but I'm holding them back pretty well.

It's okay if I'm just learning, but I've been working there for years. So what if it's not done down to the T, as long as the person gets everything they ordered... Why should it matter? Presentation is one thing that makes food so great, but are they really going to send it back because the lettuce is on top of the tomato?If they do, they're just a dickhead. Besides work, I smoked pot with my mom, and what a mistake that was. I just ended up getting pissed off and going to bed. Probably didn't help that she and Dad were drinking too. Then yesterday, I went into town with Dad to my little cousin's birthday party. He's two now; Yay for the terrible twos! But seeing all the little kids made me really think about having kids of my own some day. Not right away, obviously, but when I'm ready. The whole idea of childbirth is what scares the shit out of me. But having kids would be great, takes a lot of years before you have freedom again, yet it wouldn't matter when you get to see your own kid grow up. There's so many risks with having children though, so that always scares me. Idon't need to worry about that for a while though.

Last night me and Pat went out for supper. She waited for her son to come to her house, but he never showed. Around nine or so we headed off to Cache Creek and stopped at Heartland. THEYMEALS! I got kalamari with rice, lemon potato and Greek salad. Pat got basically the same thing but lemon chicken instead of kalamari. At the restaurant there were a couple of guys who were kind of ruining the atmosphere. They were all drinking and Hell literally broke loose when the waitress said she couldn't serve no more beers. That's when snyde remarks started to flow. Eventually, one guy explained to the others why she stopped serving beers, legal reasons. Besides that, we had a good time. Thencame home to see my neighbours partying; what a bunch of assholes.

But here Iam today, feeling like shit. Ihad planned to go into town with my friend Kyle just to do whatever. I was going to wear my black dress and everything, but those bloody words prevent me. Ican't have a good time knowing Viz. is questioning his love for me. I almost wish he just continued to ignore me, but I wanted him to talk to me again. Not exactly the words I wanted, but I got what Iasked for. I feel bad, I know it was my fault... but c'mon, he's flipped out on me before. It's true what they say, girls forgive faster than guys. I know he isn't a heartless bastard, but those are the words that came out when Iwas mad. People say stupid things when they're mad, and it's not like I really meant it. Idon't think Idid. Sure, at times he can be cold, but he's not heartless. I'm the same way though. I take the blame though. I'm such a fucking idiot at times. This is why I hate showing my feelings. Whenever I do it fucking backfires, me being the one struck by the bullet. If things turn out the way I think they will, I'm just going to avoid love all together. Why bother, I won't find anyone else. As naive as that sounds, I believe it's true.
Well, time to dry my eyes and put on a hearty smile. I'm going to town with Dad. It's going to be all sunshine and lollipops, while in my heart it will be somber and lonely. It's ironic though, I was born with a hole in my heart andyet itfeels like it has returned.

Jean-Marie Weber was always the bagman - until the bitter end. But it took decades to prove that description.
It is now proven. It is now documented in several court files.
